| The article is dedicated to the history of the Department of Economics of St.Petersburg (Leningrad) State University. Against the general historical background of the Russian economic scholarship in 1940-80s it shows the complex process of the Department’s development, including the tragic periods related to the so-called “Leningrad affair” and “struggle against cosmopolitanism.” The author stresses that in spite of all difficulties, the Department turned into a leading center of economic education and research in the country | Key words: Department of Economics, St. Petersburg State University, A.A.
