| Based on the analysis of transformations taking place in the Russian system of higher education, their adaptation to the demands of the market economy, and the challenges that it is facing in the future, the authors distinguish five major development trajectories that should come into focus of attention of both the state and the professional community within the next 15 years. Among those challenges are: institutional development, economy and investment, innovations, competition development, state control and regulation.
