| This article results from a stage-wise implementation of the International interdisciplinary academic project “Factors to develop competitiveness and efficacy in managing small- and medium-sized enterprises in local and global environment,” ¹ MGA 04–01, conducted by the Institute for Economic Research and Analytics, STING Academy. The article emphasized strategic priorities of the European Union in the sphere of research, development and innovations; on the priority tasks in implementation of “Industry 4.0” project in the Czech Republic, aligned with the fourth industrial revolution; and on the Concept of support to small- and medium-sized enterprises as the basis of the transformation process mentioned above. The authors discuss mechanism characteristic to functioning of small- and medium-sized enterprises and their management within the frames of innovation cycles, including innovations that were developed in other industries.
