| | | The article discusses the economic and social role of household that usually combines market economy (hired labor, self-employment and entrepreneurship) and non-market economy (household production, consumption). Household should thus be regarded as an important social institution. Aims and principles guiding various behaviors of household members depend on the activities and correspondences between formal and informal institutions, which themselves are different within different types of institutional environment. The author discuses the aims of households within the Soviet planned economy, analyzes their role in 1990s and in the context of transitional economy and emergence of the new institutional environment.
