The article focuses on profound transformation taking place in banking and caused by the accelerated development and implementation of innovative digital technologies, these major driving tools of transformations. The author distinguishes financial technological companies of the adjacent economic branches, as well as virtual banks that can become new active participants on the market of banking services and create a new competitive environment for the banks. The article defines the concepts of “digitalization” and “digital transformation” underlying the transformation processes in banking, and provides examples of successful banks that chose strategies of digital transformation
