| The article presents the historical periodization with respect to formation of contemporary notion on the regularities in the functioning and development of the regional economy in the context of sustainable development. Scholars’ notions on the essence and factors of sustainable development were changing in accordance with how objective and subjective preconditions of this development were viewed.
