| The article focuses on the features of the archaic institutes of gift exchange based on the particular cases of reciprocity, including their origin and obligations to sustain them. Special attention is paid to the influence of traditions and believes, i.e. factors external to economic activity, upon the formation of the economic behavior of individuals and societies as a whole. Based on the data on the role of internalized externalities, the author suggests that social and symbolic usefulness should be included into the discourse of the rational choice.
