| Spatial organization of territories is a major factor in regional development. Presently rural spaces of the steppe zone experience an active demographic transformation that result in concentration of the rural population and polarization of rural territories. Based on the data related to 306 municipal units in the regions of the European part of Russia’s steppe zone, the article distinguishes perspective and depressive rural demographic, as well as the gravitation of population towards regional centers and large urban territories. The major factors of “compression” of the developed space are natural conditions, large distance from large towns, ethnic economic traditions and specific features related to human capital preservation in the rural area. The author presents a spatial matrix of rural territories | Key words: Russia's steppe zone, rural settlement, polarization of the territory, developed space, social infrastructure | Pages: 138 - 142 |
