| The article focuses on the system of indices of progress as applied to the forestry sector in its way to the “green” economy, which correlates with the strategies of development of the forestry sector’s economy (according to The Rovaniemi Action Plan) towards more ecological forest use, forest certification, production modernization, implementation of “green” investment and low carbon development. The author discusses results of the research of the carbon balance in the forests of the Republic of Buryatia, based on the materials related to the condition of the forestry fund and the key factors that impact carbon absorption and emission. In spite of the decrease of carbon discharge in the context of increased thorough logging and fire impact, Buryatia’s forestry sector is making a considerable contribution to climate preservation.
