| The article discusses fundamental reasons, as well as strategic and tactic mistakes of the Soviet leadership that brought about self-destruction of the Soviet Union. Participants of Belovezh Accords directly connected the international recognition of their independence with the obligation to create the Commonwealth of Independent States as an inter-governmental union, with common socio-economic, military and strategic space, coordinated foreign policy and protection of linguistic, ethnic and cultural minority rights.
