| The topic nature of the research presented stems from the current formation of Russia’s spatial structure and aims at discovering scholarly grounded prospective directions of development with regard to the accelerating agglomeration processes that ensure the most effective use of the country’s existing economic potential. The growth of cities as habitation centers and intensive formation of urban agglomerations is one of the key elements in the future spatial organization. The article analyzes the role of cities and their exceptional impact upon territorial surroundings. In spite of multiple and diverse research in this sphere, strategic questions focusing on the impact of megalopolises upon Russia’s spatial development are not formulated clearly enough — while their significance, particularly as far as strategic aspects are concerned, has a rather limited theoretical application. Based on the analysis of the existing structure of Russian spatial organization and the current tendencies of its development as they are presented in a number of Russian research works, the authors distinguish the most promising features and trends in the sphere of spatial territorial development and offer an expert evaluation of the impact related to their implementation. | Key words: agglomeration, spatial development, national aims of development, system of settlement, scholarly and technological potential, cultural potential, megalopolis, agglomeration surrounding | Pages: 136 - 140 |
