| The author discusses development of large sea ports in the Baltic countries in the historical perspective and offers the concept of “path dependence” as the most probable scenario of their development in the context of geopolitical and economic indeterminacy. The current state and the economic characteristics of the Baltic ports are predetermined by the trajectories of their historical development. Prosperity of Baltic ports were facilitated by two common factors: political stability and the presence of the railroad network, which connected them with Eurasian hinterlands. The military purpose of the port on the one hand created favorable conditions for its technical modernization, but on the other, led to the loss of cargo shippers. | Key words: international sea port, cargo turnover, “path dependence”, Baltic countries, regional economy | Pages: 256 - 259 |
